Whatcha Might Not Know...Oh Deer!

<Whatcha Might Not Know are Wednesday posts that are just that...something quick that you may or may not know about me, my family, my neighborhood, my city, my world, etc.>

Having lived on a farm for a good part of my life, I was always unsure how I would really like living in the suburbs.  Well, so far, so good.  We live in an older neighborhood with big trees, woods in our backyard, and even occasionally see some awesome wildlife.  It's so much fun to hear the kids scream, "There's deer in our front yard!!" and get all excited to see them.  These little Bambis came by around dinner time last night and were first spotted by Stella.  The momma quickly appeared and led them across the street into some other woods.

Top 10 Reasons the Pirate Ship Needs Published

We know someone that recently built a Pirate Ship in their backyard.
We attended the Ship's Christening on Saturday afternoon.
Here is why I think it needs to be published in a magazine (Parents, Family Fun, etc.):

1. What better lesson on math, reading, art, etc. than building your own Pirate Ship.  This family did this project as a family this summer.  For real.  They even planned Pirate-themed dinners to end the work day.

2. It has the coolest bell.

3. And a steering wheel.

4. And underneath, you can have camp outs.
5. And dress ups are totally ok.  Tinkerbell?  Check. Fairy Butterfly Princess?  Check.
6. We also saw lots of pirates.  LOTS of pirates.

7.  Like for real...it's in their backyard.
8. And even has portholes.

9. They even designed, sewed and painted a family emblem on the flag which is on a pulley system.
10.  And the slide?  Super fast.

My Own Sunday Funny

Each week my BFF has a Sunday Funny.  Well, I've got my own this week.  Since Andy and I are going on a trip soon that will involve lots of hiking and we are also hitting Gatlinburg this fall, I thought I might want some new shoes.  Confession...I wasn't as concerned about getting actual "hiking" shoes as I was about getting my sparkling white running shoes covered in red dust and dirt.  So I just got myself some nice brown New Balance shoes.  I decided to try them out at the park tonight on an extremely low-key, but beautiful nature walk we took with the kids.

Stella: Where are your gym shoes?
Me: I got some new shoes.  So I think I'm going to try them tonight.
Stella: Can I see them? (Points at box) In here?
Me: Yep.
(Stella opens box and hesitates.)
Me: Well, what do you think?
Stella: They are really handsome.
Me: Um, thanks.
Stella: No, really handsome.
Me: So, you like them?
Stella: No mom, they're boyish.
Me: Well they are for hiking.
Stella: They look like boys.
Me: Some girl gym shoes are brown.

She wasn't convinced.

Johnson's Buddies Soap - This Saturday's Shout-Out

Have y'all ever used this stuff with little ones?  LOVE it.  If you are an all-natural or "green" parent, you may not approve because (confession) I haven't done my research on its ingredients.  Everyone else...the easy-grip bar is awesome!  We've had a little history with this simple bar of soap...

2007: Received for baby shower gift in a big basket of bath stuff.

2008-09: Loved both the lavender and the "regular" scent.  Stella could wash herself without the soap slipping everywhere.

2009ish: Couldn't find the lavender anymore...then couldn't find the regular one in stores either.

2010: Saw "discontinued" sticker on store shelves.  Couldn't find anything online that wasn't extremely expensive.  Small quantity on Amazon for the price of college tuition.  Considered it because we loved it so much, but faced reality, mourned the fact that the soap was no longer, and somehow managed to get on with our lives.

July 2011: Bag of soap delivered to our house from our friends with the above note.  They found it again at a local Walmart and basically cleared the shelf because they loved it as much as we did!

Today: You can find it EVERYWHERE!  Not sure what happened...distributor changed?  Ingredients changed?  Apparently there were some ingredient questions in some of the J&J baby products awhile ago?  (If the discussion board I found tonight was true. )

So if you are looking for a bar of soap for the tub that a toddler can easily hold onto...look no further...these are awesome.

7 Quick Takes Friday: Busy Weekend

  1. It's a busy weekend for us...starting with today.  Actually starting last night when I did Dream Dinners for the first time, but more on that later.  This morning I took the girls to the Highfield Discovery Garden at Glenwood Gardens.  And...WOW!  This place was totally cool.  See the photo above of the girls doing the picture scavenger hunt and saying "hi" to Mr. Frog and Mr. Toad.  If you are local and have little ones, you need to check this out.  There is an admission price, so plan for that.  We loved it so much we got an annual pass.
  2. The really cool thing about this morning was actually thanks to Facebook.  That thing that gets criticized for ruining relationships.  Well, let me just tell ya, it brought me together with a college friend I hadn't seen in 13 years...and 3 kids.  Each of her 3 kiddos is 4-6 months younger than my kiddos and so we met up today.  It was fun.  It took us way too long to actually connect in person.  I hope they had as much fun as we did because the kids and I hope to plan something again soon.
  3. It was either come home and nap or go swimming.  What a choice...so swimming it was!  Huge thanks to my aunt for letting us visit for a couple of hours.  And my Charlotte...would you believe she jumped off of the diving board at 2 1/2!  Such a brave one she is.
  4. And speaking of Charlotte, she now goes by "Hannah". All.the.time.
  5. Tomorrow afternoon the kids and I are heading to a Pirate Ship Christening.  Seriously.  Don't worry, I'll get photos.  That post is going to be way cool.
  6. Totally random, but I love mini Nilla wafers.  Felt I must add this since I've eaten half a box while typing this up.  Too bad the only milk we have is Vitamin D.  YUCK.  Momma must get to the grocery.
  7. Tomorrow night a friend and I are planning to see "The Help".  I read it and loved it and everyone is saying that the movie is pretty good even if you liked the book.
I hope you have a great weekend!

Whatcha Might Not Know...East vs. West...Yes, it Matters!

<Whatcha Might Not Know are Wednesday posts that are just that...something quick that you may or may not know about me, my family, my neighborhood, my city, my world, etc.>

Growing up in and around Cincinnati, there was something I learned early on...you were either from the West Side or the East Side.  Back in January, I even made mention of getting my passport out to go across town to visit relatives in my restaurant scissors post.

You will find quotes about it online: "There is a rivalry between the "East Side" and "West Side" of Cincinnati. Historically people from the West Side were blue collar workers, while those from the East Side were white collar workers." (source)

And there are even forum discussions.  Many written by transplants confused as to where they live and why it matters.  My favorite post in one discussion was this: "And on the 8th day, God created North Cincinnati so all of the normal people would have somewhere to live." (source)  But, I do live "north" and I'm not sure how normal I am.

People may not always ask what side you live on...however, it is apparently critical to know what high school you attended.  That question will come up no matter what, "Hi, nice to meet you.  What's your name?  What high school did you attend?"  I think it's a translation for "What side of town are you from??"

And when people move to the other side?  BLASPHEMY!  You may as well have moved across the country.  Because trekking from one side to the other is inconvenient - you know, due to the passport and all.

Here are a few great East/West cartoons I hope you enjoy!

Top 10 Things I Will Miss Without Baby #4

  1. Feeling that first kick when you are pregnant.  Because the toddler tantrum kicks…wow!
  2. How everyone is so nice to the pregnant lady or the lady with the newborn…holds the door, stops the car to allow you walk in front of it, stops you on neighborhood walks to see the baby, etc.  People have let a door slam on me when I’m obviously trying to corral two toddlers and a stroller through it…uh, thanks.
  3. The excitement and anxiety you get at the very same time when you realize “Holy Crap…today I’m bringing a person into the world!”
  4. The birth – Ok so not the whole thing.  But that moment when you find out the sex.  What?  People find out ahead of time?  Not us.  That moment in the delivery room was always so exciting to me.
  5. Those first bonding moments and snuggles with something so…fresh.  So brand new those first few weeks.  So tiny in those itty-bitty NB size clothes.
  6. Those quiet moments early on in the middle of the night in the rocker in the baby’s room.  Exhausted, yet satisfied.
  7. The fact that no one comes up to you or looks your way and frowns when you are holding a newborn.  (But they will when it’s a toddler!!)
  8. Maternity leave naps – Who am I kidding?  I think I took ONE nap with the last leave.  They say “sleep when the baby sleeps”…who does that?  Anyone???  I did a handful of times with my first, but never after that.
  9. That baby smell…because, sadly, my boy…well, smells like a boy now.
  10. Sharing all of this with my hubby again…the man of my dreams.
Grieving and its stages are very serious.  I am not attempting to mock this at all.  I am, however, very aware that some decisions we make cause us to go through similar stages.  Big decisions.  I feel that through the process of deciding on a 4th, I’ve felt some of those stages:

Anger: “Why did it take us so long to have Stella?”  “Why are kids so exhausting?”  “And expensive?”

Bargaining: ”If only we’d tried to have kids even sooner or seen the fertility specialist sooner…”

Guilt: “There are so many people trying desperately to have ONE baby and here we are worrying over #4?  And we’re leaning towards a NO?”

Depression: “So this is really it? Henry will never be a big brother?”

And I’ve come to Acceptance.  A very peaceful acceptance.

I have no regrets.  The decision was made together, the procedure is over. But I will mourn the little things.  The things above.  The same way I mourn the fact that Andy and I will never have our first kiss again.

So now it’s time to celebrate HUGE milestones…NO MORE FORMULA OR BOTTLES!!!  We crossed that milestone this past weekend.  YIPPEE!  And we are celebrating the fact that this little guy...no matter how big he gets...will always be the baby of the family.

I Get it Now about the Dress-Ups...Meet Miss Hannah

There are so many things in life that you just don't get until you experience it yourself.  Let's see...living on your own, getting engaged, planning a wedding, traveling to a foreign country, living in the south, being pregnant, giving birth, having kids, having a child only want to wear one dress-up outfit...all.the.time.

My Stella was never really big on dress-ups.  She had a few princess gowns and would put them on every now and then, but it was no big deal and it was more about the put-it-all-on and then take-it-all-off.  She actually had more fun just sitting with a container of play jewelry.

So when my sister once told me that my nephew refused to take off his Buzz Lightyear costume, I didn't get it.  He even wore it to the grocery.  And then when everyone said, "Hey Buzz!" he took one look at my sister and said, "See, I told you everyone would know me" or something like that.  He wore that costume for months.

Well, now my Charlotte will NOT wear anything at home other than a dance recital outfit handed down to us from a cousin.  She adores this thing.  She turns into Princess Hannah, a butterfly fairy princess when she has it on.  Usually she is in full gear...the outfit, the butterfly wings, a sad looking paper crown and the matching hot-pink arm coverings.  All while walking around in baby blue Cinderella shoes.  The ones with the little heels.  That clack clack clack all over the tile.  That come so close to removing one of Henry's fingers or toes.

Luckily, I convinced her to remove most of the accessories when my dad was visiting on Sunday.  Not that I didn't want him to see her in it...no, it's a hoot to view.  BUT, because she wanted to show him how well she's doing on the bike he got her.  I lost the battle by allowing her to keep on the outfit, but at least her toes are covered and her head is safe.

The Simple Things: Thank You Cards & Salsa

So my Stella is a such a sweet soul.  She is in that phase where she loves to draw pictures and color pictures for others.  She particularly likes one of Andy's co-workers and often talks about her at home.  She's always coloring something for this woman.  Well, Andy took the latest Barbie coloring page into work last week.  And a few days later Stella got some mail...and practically jumped out of her skin when she read the woman's name on the return address.  The lady had sent Stella the sweetest thank you card.  And here's how I found Stella later that night...sound asleep...holding the card.

On a completely random note...I updated another recipe with photos today after making some homemade salsa.  As usual, it was YUMMY!

Hitched and Stitched - This Saturday's Shout-Out

Some of you might remember way back in February when I had the Spotted Elephant make a cookie monster hat for Charlotte's birthday.  Click HERE to see that adorable thing again.  Well, she's been at it again.  However, she's in transition to a new name...Hitched and Stitched.  Apparently in taking their idea a step further and thinking about an Etsy shop, etc. they discovered there are a lot of Spotted Elephants already out there...bummer!

And here's what happened while the cute married couple discussed this:
"Darn, that's a bitch."
"But we'll still stitch."
"Yep, I've got an itch to stitch."
"I've got an itch for a sandwich."
"You're making me twitch."
"It's time to ditch it all and stitch."

"Maybe we'll stitch and get rich."
"Oh, don't be a witch...it's about more than getting rich."
"Yes, it's will enrich our lives, since we're hitched."
"It's our niche."
"We need a name switch for when we make a sales pitch."
"We're HITCHED and STITCHED!"

Ok, so I made all of that up, but it could have went down that way.

So what has she done for me lately?  Well, she's made me both a sunglass holder and some pot holders for my BFF's new kitchen.  Because every new kitchen needs new accessories, right?

And awhile back at the beginning of the summer, Hitched and Stitched helped a friend of mine out-of-state with a birthday party favor...coin purses!  She had the most adorable birthday party for her 7-year old.  It was a movie party complete with a concession stand.  So each guest got a monogrammed coin purse filled with "money" to buy treats at the concession stand before the movie.  So they had to practice their money skills.  How cute...and educational...and fun!  Here are some pictures of that:

So whether you are near or far, if you need something stitched...check out her new blog (especially this non-craft post about how to make a chocolate chip-oreo love child because oh.my.yumminess!) and her website or facebook page that are still in name transition.

7 Quick Takes Friday: First Edition

  1. Can you even believe that this little baby is getting to be such a big guy?  Here he is checking on his big sisters out the front door.  He'll be walking soon!
  2. I finally caught up-to-date over on House Unseen.  It's kind of weird.  Unless I fall behind again, I'll only be able to read one new post a day.  Huh.  In honor of catching up, I'm participating in 7 Quick Takes...a post she regular does.  Although, even she will admit it...hers aren't always quick
  3. Since I'm doing 7 Quick Takes I tried to find the blog button...but seems like it's not there.  Or I just can't locate it.  So I'll be uploading it as a .jpg and trying to put a link on it.  This should be interesting.  (didn't work so I just linked the caption - those of you that have a better method...help me out!)
  4. While catching up on House Unseen I came across this article on SAHMs needing help and then I saw this post about surviving multiple kids. All I have to say is this: working moms need help too (neither implied they don't) and no one needs to be a martyr.  I know a few moms that "hide" the fact that they have help...some are SAHMs.  And I know some moms who feel that getting help is showing defeat.  WHY?  Moms need help...lots of it.  I was blog-hopping and found this quote HERE on The Life & Times of M&M: "One reason we struggle with insecurity: we're comparing our behind the scenes to everyone else's highlight reel." - Steven Furtick  SO TRUE!
  5. Therefore, I was HAPPY to help out a girlfriend today who was in a babysitting bind.  Her need for help resulted in me hosting an awesome Play-Doh party this morning on my day off.  Yep, Play-Doh.  4 toddlers happy for 1.5 hours.  All it cost me was 30 minutes of time to clean up afterwards (it was a MESS) - well worth it!
  6. Speaking of Play-Doh, we don't get it out very often which is why I think the thrill of it lasted so long.  In fact we just today opened the Magic Swirl Ice Cream Shop Charlotte got for her birthday.  In February.  The kids loved it.  I hated it.  Because I was a necessary participant the ENTIRE time.  The ice cream swirler and topping making thingamajigs were so difficult to operate I could barely do it.  Cute results, but be prepared to help out and get really irritated at the machine.
  7. On a totally random note...we've had a lot of health issues surround us lately - friends, friends of friends, and family.  I'll leave it at that...so just keep sick people, surgery people, normal human medical procedure people, sick kids, really sick kids, etc. in your thoughts and hug your little ones a little tighter tonight.

Embrace the Camera - Monkey See, Monkey Do

One of the things I love about our daycare
is that they often will take a picture
for me of something fun or funny.
Earlier this year Charlotte went through a bag-lady phase.
Loading up all kinds of bags and carrying them around
with her babies, stuffed animals, blankets, etc.
It was quite hilarious to see just how much
she could drag around with her.

Today on my way into the office
I had a complete "AH-HA" moment.
You see, there I was...
walking in like a bag-lady.
Apparently Monkey See, Monkey Do!
And the apple definitely doesn't fall far from the tree...
But for the record, I only wear a hard hat
maybe twice a year...
so that was just a coincidence on her head!

Whatcha Might Not Know...Residence Life

<Whatcha Might Not Know are Wednesday posts that are just that...something quick that you may or may not know about me, my family, my neighborhood, my city, my world, etc.>

Yep, I was one of them.  An RA in college.  For two years.  And I've got to say...it's awesome to be the one in charge.  People made fun of me, but all I have to say is those that make the rules...often break the rules!  HA!  Definitely some of the best years of my life.  Someday I'll enlighten you with a few stories...what it was like to live on the same floor as the XU Men's Basketball team, a scavenger hunt that involved some of the grossest items ever, and the "force field" that protected our RA desk.  Good times!

When Sharks Attack

So last night I was in the water swimming.  And my mom was nearby.  And we knew it was dangerous.  We knew there were sharks.  But I went back in anyway.  She could see me.  She knew it wasn't safe.  She looked away.  And then I was gone.  Her eyes frantically searched the water.  She couldn't see me.  But she thought she could see my swimsuit.  Colors from it under the water.  And suddenly, my head popped up.  I exclaimed, "I had to dive back down for my arm!"  And sure enough I was holding one of my arms.  The shark had attacked.  She was relieved to see me but hysterical due to the arm thing.  And then the ambulance sounded.  Over and over and over again...until she woke up and realized it was the alarm clock.  And she had been dreaming.

Funny thing?  She didn't even read yesterday's Sink or Swim post until later this morning.  That's the thing about moms...they know things about you before you even tell them.  For some reason she had that dream on her own.  However, she knew deep down I would make it out (you did, right mom?).  Even if it's going to cost me a body part.

Today is better than yesterday was.  I'm still drowning, but less.  And I have a plan...a new path.  Nothing earth-shattering.  But a plan to de-clutter, purge, throw/give crap away.  I think I am just suffocating in stuff.  It's time to LET GO.  I've got to shake the "but I might need it one day..." attitude.  I can't clear my mind until I clear my house.

Anyone else been through this?
